📋 Exam Overview
What Makes the Translator Post Unique — Two Skills, One Exam
The Translator (Anuvadak) post has the most complex selection process among all CG High Court posts. Phase I is a 100-mark MCQ screening test — General English, General Hindi, Computer Knowledge, General Aptitude, Reasoning. No minus marking. Based on Phase I merit, 15 candidates per vacancy (1:15 ratio) are called for Phase II. Phase I marks play no role after this. Phase II has two parts:
(A) Written Translation Test — 100 marks (this determines your job)
English → Hindi translation: 300-word passage, 50 marks, ½ mark deducted per mistake.
Hindi → English translation: 300-word passage, 50 marks, ½ mark deducted per mistake.
Final merit list is prepared on Phase II Written Test marks only. Highest scorer gets selected.
(B) Skill Test (Typing) — 50 marks (qualifying only)
Hindi typing: 250 words in 10 min (25 marks). English typing: 300 words in 10 min (25 marks). Deduction: 0.25 marks per mistake. Minimum qualifying: 10 marks. Ubuntu Linux + LibreOffice Writer + Lohit Devanagari font. Keyboard: Vedmata m17n or Remington Gail m17n. You must clear the skill test to qualify — but its marks do not count in final merit.

Vedmata & Remington Available
| Component | What Is Tested | Platform |
| Typing Test | Hindi typing (choose Vedmata or Remington Gail m17n) + English typing (QWERTY). Formatted passage — bold, italic, headings, bullets, numbering, superscript, subscript. Min 25 WPM Hindi / 30 WPM English — target 35/40 WPM | Ubuntu + LibreOffice Writer |
| Translation Test | Translate a legal passage from English → Hindi OR Hindi → English. Accuracy of meaning, legal terminology, grammar, completeness evaluated | LibreOffice Writer on Ubuntu |
🚨 Why 25/30 WPM Is Not Enough for Translator
The typing passage has 15–25 format changes (bold, italic, headings, bullets, numbering, superscript, subscript). Each format change costs 2–4 seconds. Over a 10-minute test, that is 30–100 seconds lost — equal to 8–10 WPM reduction in effective speed. A candidate typing 25 WPM plain will score only 15–17 WPM net in the formatted exam. Practice target: 35 WPM Hindi and 40 WPM English on plain text — the +10 WPM buffer covers formatting overhead.
⌨️ Typing Component
Typing Requirements — Ubuntu Linux, LibreOffice, Keyboard Choice
The typing component is identical in platform to other CG Court posts — Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, LibreOffice Writer, IBus m17n. The key difference is that as a Translator you are expected to be fluent in both languages, so both Hindi and English typing must be strong.
⌨️ You Choose Your Keyboard Layout
Both Vedmata m17n and Remington Gail m17n are available on the Ubuntu exam system via IBus. You select your preferred layout before the exam starts. Both produce identical Unicode Devanagari output — the difference is only in key mapping. Choose the one your fingers know.

📖 Translation Component
Legal Translation Mastery — The Skill That Separates Translators
The translation component requires you to convert a legal passage from one language to the other — accurately, completely, with correct legal terminology and formal register. No dictionary or reference material is allowed. You must know the vocabulary actively — not just recognise it.

🔄 Top Translation Mistakes to Avoid
- Word-for-word (literal) translation. "The Court held that..." → न्यायालय ने अभिनिर्धारित किया कि... — not न्यायालय ने पकड़ा कि. Legal Hindi has specific formal equivalents — use them.
- Using casual language for legal terms. "Judge" = न्यायाधीश, not जज. "Case" = वाद or प्रकरण, not केस. Casual terms cost marks.
- Changing legal meaning. "Shall" (अनिवार्य) vs "may" (वैकल्पिक) — these are not interchangeable. Every word in a legal passage is deliberate.
- Omitting parts of the passage. Translate everything — missing clauses or sub-clauses loses marks on completeness.
- Wrong sentence structure. English uses S-V-O order. Hindi uses S-O-V order. Translate meaning and restructure — do not preserve English syntax in Hindi output.
📝 Daily Translation Routine
Morning 15 min: Read one article from The Hindu on courts/law. Note legal terms.
Afternoon 15 min: Translate one 4-sentence legal paragraph from English to Hindi. Check against reference if available.
Evening 30 min: Typing practice on TypingWarriors — formatted passages in both languages.
60 days of this routine builds both translation accuracy and typing speed simultaneously.
❓ FAQ
CG High Court Translator Skill Test — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the CG High Court Translator skill test pattern? ▼
Phase I: 100-mark MCQ screening, shortlists 1:15 for Phase II.
Phase II (A) — Written Translation Test (100 marks, final merit): English→Hindi (50 marks, 300 words, ½ mark/mistake) + Hindi→English (50 marks, 300 words, ½ mark/mistake). No reference material allowed. This is what decides your selection rank.
Phase II (B) — Skill Typing Test (50 marks, qualifying only): Hindi 250 words in 10 min (25 marks) + English 300 words in 10 min (25 marks). 0.25 marks deducted per mistake. Minimum 10 marks to qualify. Ubuntu Linux + LibreOffice Writer + Lohit Devanagari font. Keyboard: Vedmata m17n or Remington Gail m17n. Pass the typing test to stay in — but marks do not count in final merit.
Which keyboard layout for the Translator typing exam? ▼
Both Vedmata m17n and Remington Gail m17n are available on the Ubuntu Linux exam system via IBus. You choose before starting. Both produce identical Unicode Hindi output. If you know Remington Gail from CPCT or MP Court, choose Remington Gail m17n. If you are learning Hindi typing from scratch, choose Vedmata m17n. TypingWarriors has both keyboard images and practice modes for both layouts.
Does the Translator typing exam have formatting? ▼
Yes. The typing passage contains bold (Ctrl+B), italic (Ctrl+I), underline (Ctrl+U), Heading 1 (Ctrl+1), Heading 2 (Ctrl+2), sub-headings, bullet lists (Shift+F12), numbered lists (F12), superscript (Ctrl+Shift+P), and subscript (Ctrl+Shift+B) — all applied in LibreOffice Writer on Ubuntu. Formatting overhead reduces effective speed by 8–10 WPM, which is why the practice target must be 35 WPM Hindi and 40 WPM English on plain text.
Is the translation test open-book or from memory? ▼
From memory — no dictionary or reference material is allowed. You must translate based on your own knowledge of legal vocabulary and both languages. This is why building an active (not just passive) legal vocabulary is critical — you must be able to produce terms like न्यायाधीश, क्षेत्राधिकार, दोषसिद्धि instantly, without looking them up. Start vocabulary building at least 2–3 months before the exam.
Which direction is the translation — English to Hindi or Hindi to English? ▼
Prepare both directions equally — the notification may require either or both. Hindi to English is generally harder for candidates whose English writing is weaker. Spend extra time on your weaker direction. In both cases, the test requires formal legal register — not casual language.
What qualification is needed for CG High Court Translator post? ▼
Typically a bachelor's degree in Hindi or English (or both) from a recognised university, with proficiency in both languages. Some notifications also require a translation diploma or certificate. Eligibility varies by notification year — always check the official CG Vyapam or CG High Court recruitment notification PDF for your specific cycle.
